250 millions years ago, the Earth's continents were fused into a single landmass called Pangaea. Europe was located somewhere above North America and merged with Asia. Geological evidence and continental plate motions trends predict that over the course of the next 250 million years, Pangaea will reemerge as Australia collides with East Asia and China, California slides northward and Africa collides with southern Europe, closing the Mediterranean Sea. As for the present, people in most parts of the world divide the globe into six continents -- Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe and America whereas in the USA, they divide it into seven - Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Still others claim there are six continents but that it's actually Europe and Asia that form one continent. The least popular theory seems to be that there are in fact only five real continents -- Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Eurasia and America. Pangaea was originally created for Markus Miessen's Drawing Europe project for the Lyon Biennale and the accompanying book The Violence of Participation published by Sternberg press. |
