Playlist is a lecture-performance presenting a cross section of contemporary television ads from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. I initially came across many of these ads when doing research for my video “Mouthfeel.” Out of a total of 1500+ ads researched, I present a selection of 25-30 ads and situate them in specific economic and historical contexts including the 19th century rise of domestic science as scientific discipline made by and for women and that field’s transmutation in the early 20th century into the more circumscribed domain of home economics; the 21st century phenomenon of tropical tech (the increasing investments made by tech companies into tech labs in sub saharan africa); and the surprising, sometimes counter-intuitive connections between war and advertising as seen in ads from Vietnam and Iraq.
